The Event

01. An open water challenge straight into the Atlantic Ocean across three distances!

The second edition of the Oeiras Open Water Race arrives on May 3rd, 2025, at Praia de Caxias , in Oeiras, Portugal.

The Competition has three distances:

  • 750 meters
  • 1.500 meters
  • 3.000 meters

What's new

Set your goal and come achieve it in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. This year, you can register for all three distances and benefit from a special price. Participation can be individual, in a team, or in a relay. Don’t miss out on this initiative promoted by the Clube Olímpico de Oeiras, with the support of the Oeiras City Council and technical organisation by HMS Sports.

FOTOP Partnership

On 12 April 2025, FOTOP will be present at the event with several photographers. The photographs will be available on the FOTOP website.

03. All about the Event

Routes and schedules

Start and Finish Lines

Minimum age for participation

  • 15 years old

Three courses

  • 750 meters
  • Start: 12:00 PM
  • 1 lap (starting and finishing on the seashore)
  • Time limit: 40 minutes
  • 1.500 meters
  • Start: 11:00 AM
  • 1 laps (starting and finishing on the seashore)
  • Time limit: 50 minutes
  • 3.000 meters
  • Start: 9:00 AM
  • 2 laps (starting and finishing on the seashore)
  • Time limit: 90 minutes

Mandatory usage

  • Swim Cap and timing chip provided by the organization

Procedures at Starting Line

  • Athletes must line up in the boxes identified for the respective course;
  • Athletes are lined up by the arrival order at the box;
  • 8 athletes will start at once, with a gap of 10 seconds between each start;
  • The race only starts when the athlete steps on the timing mat placed in the starting area.

Supplies

  • Solid and liquid supply kit at the end of the race.

Procedures at Finish Line

  • The timing chip must be returned to the organization at the end of the race.

Race Packet

  • Includes a swim cap, a timing chip, and a technical t-shirt.

Race Packet Pick Up

Saturday, May 3rd, at Praia de Caxias (Oeiras) , according to the course in which you are registered:

  • 3.000 meters: from 7:00 AM to 8:50 AM
  • 1.500 meters: from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM
  • 750 meters: from 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM

Documents required to pick up the race packet

  • Registration confirmation received in the email box after payment;
  • Identification document (Identity Card, Citizen Card, Driving License).

Race packet pick up on behalf of another athlete

  • Registration confirmation received in the email box after payment;
  • Identification document of the person picking up the race packet (Identity Card, Citizen Card, Driving License).

What's New - Relay

This year, participation in the Oeiras Open Water Race can be done through Relays.

  • Composition: 3 members
  • Minimum number: two elements (one of them may repeat the course, but it is prohibited for the same swimmer to perform two consecutive courses)
  • Relays can consist exclusively of women, men, or be mixed
  • Distance: 3 x 400 metres
  • Time limit: 45 minutes
  • Minimum age to participate: 15 years old
  • Relay limit: 50
  • Pick-up of the starter kit: from 11:45 to 12:20
  • Kit contents: 3 swim caps + 3 T-shirts + 1 chip (will function as the relay baton)
  • Start time: 12:40 PM
  • Mandatory use: swim cap and chip provided by the organisation
  • Procedure - Relays with 3 swimmers: the first relay member must line up at the start, while the remaining members should stay in the designated handover zone. The swimmer currently competing must correctly wear the chip on their ankle. The chip serves as the baton. Upon completing their course, the swimmer must hand the chip to the next relay member within the handover box, and the second swimmer must attach it to their ankle before starting their course. This procedure is repeated for the third relay member.
  • Procedure - Relays with 2 Swimmers: in a relay consisting of only two members, it is prohibited for the same swimmer to perform two consecutive courses. The procedure is as follows: swimmer 1 completes the initial course and hands the chip, within the handover box, to swimmer 2, who completes the second course and passes the chip, within the handover box, back to swimmer 1, who then performs the third course.

Prizes

Trophies will be awarded to the following athletes:

  • The top three overall male and female finishers in the 750m, 1,500m, and 3,000m events
  • Winning team of the team classification (only for the 1.500m and 3.000m courses) (*)
  • The top three male and female finishers registered in the 3-distance pack
  • The top three relay teams with the best overall race time (**)
(*) For the team classification, the first five athletes are considered, regardless of gender, based on the sum of times. All members must use the same team name when registering.
(**) Relays are awarded overall and not based on gender.

To the male and female winners of each category of the 750 meter, 1.500 meter and 3.000 meter courses will be offered a registration for the Oeiras Open Water Race 2026 edition, with registration valid only for the respective athletes.

  • 7:00 AM: Cloakroom opening
  • 7:00 AM to 8:50 AM: Distribution of the 3.000 metres kit + pack of 3 distances
  • 9:00 AM: Start of the 3.000 metres
  • 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM: Distribution of the 1.500 metres kit
  • 10:15 AM: 3.000 metres podium
  • 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM: Distribution of the 750 metres kit
  • 11:00 AM: Start of the 1.500 metres
  • 11:40 AM: 1.500 metres podium
  • 11:45 AM to 12:20 PM: Relay Kit Distribution
  • 12:00 PM: Start of the 750 metres
  • 12:30 PM: 750 metres podium + pack 3 distâncias
  • 12:40 PM: Start of the Relays
  • 1:15 PM: Relays podium
  • 1:30 PM: Event closing
